Greetings Folks,
When I think about our guild and what we are helping to bring to Butler this fall: not only the number of leather workers but the amount of talent they bring with them, the quality and quantity of the leather work that will be displayed & entered into the competition, the number of great workshops that will be offered, the continuous demonstrations and everything else that goes with an IFOLG Show, all I can think about is what an opportunity we have this year to show this area the beauty & versatility of this wonderful medium we work with. The challenge we have is how do we get as many people as possible to attend our show? We will have no greater opportunity for our guild to grow or to get the word out about the joys and benefits of working with leather. Does that mean that we do nothing until October to help our guild grow? Not at all! We need to talk to as many people as we can about leather working and our guild. If you know of an event that we can do this at, bring all of the info with you to this months meeting. If we can get out in the community we will. But the majority of our efforts between now and October should be and will be on co-hosting an excellently done IFOLG Show.
If you cant
wait until October to get together with other leather workers for a weekend of
learning, sharing, competition and just plain old fun, then the Calumet Area Leathercrafters Guild have an opportunity that you wont want to
miss. April 28-30, at the Holiday
Inn, Michigan City,
Hey, are you
looking for an opportunity to pick up some tools and/or supplies at some great
prices? If so, then you better plan on joining us on March 19th. You
may remember Dave Melrose, the owner of Daves
Leather Shop in Belle
A few years back
Dave brought a load of tools, books, and
all kinds of supplies and sold everything at a good price. Well, Dave will be joining us
again in March and he promises to bring a pickup load that he will sell for
pennies on the dollar. When Dave had his shop he repaired and made (?)
shoes and saddles, among other things. He has since closed his shop and now
does art shows full time. Besides coming to give us some great deals on stuff
you know you want, Dave has agreed to spend time with us and answer any
questions you may have about owning & operating your business or doing
shows full time or the many how do you do this, or what do you use for that,
questions. (Dave let me know that the
last time he was here someone asked him about what finish he uses on his projects
and he told them it was his own special mixture, which at that time he didnt
share. This has really bothered Dave. He feels bad that he did not take the
opportunity to share what he knows. He
assured me that it wouldnt happen again.) So plan on joining us at our
regularly scheduled March meeting. It is sure to be a jam-packed good time.
Speaking of Daves, how many people do you know start the New Year off hoping to gain weight? Well our good friend Dave Briggs does! After his surgeries in December, Dave says he was nothing but skin and bones. Since then he has gained some of his weight back and is building his strength back up so that he can have one more surgery to get himself all fixed up. Dave, our thoughts & prayers are still with you, We hope things go well enough that you can be there in March for our own little bit of March Madness
Okay, one more last thing. Carol Higgins is feverishly putting together a list of the mini-workshops as well as lining up folks to do one-hour demonstrations at the IFOLG show in October. If you can help with either of these, especially the demonstrations as so many folks will be needed, please let me know ASAP. My contact info is on the front of this newsletter. Thanks in advance your being willing to share your time & talents.
I hope to see you at Februarys meeting.
Your
friend, Christopher
Leather Classes & Projects
It was decided at the January meeting to take a slightly different approach to the projects and classes at the next several meetings.
Starting in February we will make a small purse. We will be making a purse similar to the Dasher Handbag Kit listed in the Tandy Catalog as #44365-00 for the regular tooling leather or #46003-00 for the Nature Tand tooling leather. Either of these is available for under $23.00.
We will show you how to layout and cut a purse from a pattern if you dont want to purchase a kit. There will be several variations of the purse explained and demonstrated in the layout. Variations will include different gussets
and closure systems. Some closure systems will require additional hardware and some will not.
The March meeting will cover decorating, dying, and finishing the purse. We will be concentrating on some of the patterns popular in the 60s as demonstrated in the Tandy book, Creating Nature Tand Designs #46100-00. The dye will be applied using the block dying technique.
The April meeting will be the final assembly of the purse.
You will need to bring the following items to the February meeting to start the design, layout, and cutting of the purse parts:
1.
Pen and #2
pencil.
2.
Tracing
paper/film
3.
Heavy paper or
poster board if you want a more durable pattern
4.
Craft knife to
cut the heavy paper or poster board and leather
5.
Surface to cut on
6.
5/6 oz or 6/7 oz
leather approximately 2 sf
7.
Stylus or awl to
trace outline on the leather
For the Februarys meeting, we will have blank leather available for those of you who want it. This leather will be sold at cost. If you want to purchase your own leather someplace else, you should be able to do this project with either a single or double shoulder in the appropriate weight.
After this project is completed, we will have to decide if we want to learn a new technique to decorate the leather and/or start a new project. A couple options for projects are a leather covered pillow or a Hunting Bag that is popular as a purse. Think about what you would like to do.
