Greetings Folks and Happy New Year!!

I trust that most of you not only survived the Holidays, but enjoyed your time with family and friends. And should I ask how many of you made New Years resolutions to spend more time working with leather, or should I assume that since everyone did we need to make our meetings as fun,  informative, and filled with as many hands on projects as possible? Okay then, that's what we will do!

One of our members who didn't have his best Christmas ever was Dave Briggs. After some complications following a scheduled surgery which led to another surgery to 'fix the problem', Dave spent Christmas in the hospital. Although Dave should be home recuperating now, there is at least one more surgery scheduled. So please keep Dave & Paula in your prayers. If you would like to drop him a card or quick note his address is: 5318 Newton Falls Rd., Ravenna, OH 44266. Dave, we hope your recovery is going well and that we will see you soon!

IFOLG Show Update

2006 should be a very busy and fun year for the Pitt Pounders as we continue to work hand-in-hand with our friends in the International Internet Leather Guild to prepare to co-host the International Federation Of Leather Guilds Annual Show right here in Butler, PA, October 13-15. In the last two newsletters we listed the committees that the Pitt Pounders  are responsible for and who was doing what. Here is a quick update:

Show packet: Maria Haddock did a great job getting the show packets together with help from Pat Hay and Hope Boltz.

Publicity: Mark Strain, President of the Buckeye Leather Guild, stepped up to take care of national publicity. And Al Runser will take care of the local stuff. (Al, it's great to have you back and doing well!)

Social & Awards Ceremony:(Formerly under the heading of Banquet.) A) Peggy Gabauer has said that she would help plan & organize the pie & cider social, but she can't do it alone. Can you help her? D) Peggy is also the one to contact if you would be willing to make small leather items to be used as giveaways durring the awards ceremony. Her email is: peggab@webtv.net (Peggy, Sue Bergfeld let me know that she will be making bookmarks for the centerpieces.) B) Someone to take photos of all entries, put those photos on a disk and project pictures of the winning entries during the Awards Ceremony. C) Someone to put together a DVD of all the past IFOLG shows using both still photos & video.

Now there was at least one person each who said they would help with B & C, but because I lost everything on my computer back in November, and have been locked out of my yahoo email account for the past few weeks, I don't know who this was or how to get in touch with them. I am sorry about this, but if you can help in either of these areas, please email me again.

Demonstrators / teachers: Carol Higgins has graciously offered her experience to line up the pre-show classes, mini workshops &

demonstrators for the show. If you would like to teach a mini- workshop or do some type of  demonstration lasting about an hour, please get in touch with Carol at: higgins@teknology.net

FYI we will be having two pre-show classes: Edd Lucas will be leading folks in a molded case project, and Jan Schoonover will be leading folks in creating a wolf's head. We hope to have more info on these classes soon.

Show check in: Joe & Mary Jane Talbot and....

Show Program: Terry Moore will be putting this together. His email address is: tlmoore1948@akvalley.net

SITE COMMITTEE: Chair Gary Draper

Show site: Days Inn Conference Center, 139 Pittsburgh Road, Butler, PA 16001. 724-287-6761

Room setup: As both the banquet halls we will be using are in different parts of the hotel, we still need someone willing to make nice, large directional signs.

Hospitality room: We need folks willing to supply refreshments as well as folks to man this room.

Commercial sales & Commercial sales

setup: Ron Ross has the floor plans all drawn up and Dave Briggs was taking care of lining up

the vendors for the show, until he ended up in the hospital. Dave has asked that someone would take over getting vendors for the show as he doesn't feel he will be able to work on this at present.

Workshop rooms: The hotel will setup the rooms to meet our needs.

Security: An outside agency will provide security at the show.

Thanks to so many of you who have already done a great deal of work for this show, as well as to those who have already volunteered to fill a need. There is still A LOT of work to be done. If you can help in any way, please contact me, Chris Kearns at: ckearns109@yahoo.com 724-816-3901.

Or Ron Ross rosaddlery@aol.com

Thanks folks, for making this a great guild to be part of. Hope to see you at our next meeting.

Your Friend,

Christopher

PS I just received the latest listing of reference photos from Krausman's Woodcarving Studio. This is a great resource if you are looking for good pictures of birds of prey, waterfowl, game birds, songbirds, fish & aquatic and mammals. Each set will contain anywhere from 11 to 30 pictures of the same subject. 1-877-572-8762 www.referencephotos.com

THE GUILD AND TANDY TAKE ON THE CUB SCOUTS.

On Monday, December 5, 2005, Jim Waldrep from Tandy Leather,  Draper
and myself,  presented  a "Introduction to Leather"   to  the cub scouts at Seneca
Valley.  There were approximately fifteen boys and seven adults attending our class, held at  Seneca Valley High School, located just outside of Zelienople
Jim  started his talk with  rattle snake stories that really got the attention of the young  scouts. It turns out  that Jin has been  bitten four or five  times.  Ask him about it.

Jim   brought  samples of leather to show and scrap pieces for the boys to work on.
He taught the boys the history of leather and showed them about fifteen different types of leather,  including the  those that  can be used for tooling. He also brought about two hundred stamping tools.
The last hour was spent tooling leather. After working with the boys for about 2 hours, they seemed to have a  better understanding and seemed more knowledgeable regarding the processing and how to carve   leather.  The boys seemed to have enjoyed themselves as much as we did.  In
all, it was a rewarding experience and hopefully we can share our leather  knowledge with other groups in the future.
In behalf of the guild I want to thank Jim for donating his time and  sharing his knowledge with the cub scouts.  Thank you,

                                                                                                                        Kevin Cohn – Vice President,
