Greetings Folks,

Wow! Can you believe that it is November already?? And that the show which we have been planning for and talking about for years is over, and the Holidays are just around the corner???!  Again, Wow. But I have to tell you that it sure is nice to have a large part of my house back, plus not have to be online every night answering questions and making plans. I’m sure many of you are relieved as well. So many of you helped in so many ways, some of you being involved from the very beginning, others of you getting involved at the end, or even at the show. Whenever it was, IT IS ONLY BECAUSE SO MANY OF YOU WERE WILLING TO GIVE OF YOUR TIME & TALENTS THAT THIS SHOW WAS AS SUCCESSFUL AS IT WAS! Big or small, your involvement is greatly appreciated by me!! Thank you so much, not only for making ours a great show, but for being good people to be around.

Although this show didn’t draw as many people from the general public as our past shows have, those who did attend were very much interested. There were at least 5 people that I know of, who attended classes who got the information about our guild & the show at the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Plus I met a number of other folks who wanted more information about our guild, the meetings & what we do each month. This I believe is one of the biggest reasons to host a show. We gather not only to get together with old friends & make new ones, share our knowledge & talents, learn from others and grow in our abilities, but to share our love of the craft with those who are new to it or who are just showing an interest. In this way both our guild and our craft will grow.

And on a very much related note, as we look ahead for what we may be doing as a guild, a number of possibilities were mentioned at the show. Jeff Carnes talked about the possibility of teaching a class on the proper use of a head knife. Al Runser expressed an interest in teaching a class on molded leather as well as one on using an airbrush. Paul Burnett may be willing to come up for another all day class

sometime this spring. Getting Kevin Cohn to teach us how to make a belt, from start to finish. Plus there is still the idea of a class on embossing as well as at least one class on using paints with leather. As well as an invitation to have our summer picnic at a saddle makers shop in Morrisdale, PA, where I am told there is plenty of room for camping. So if you are interested in growing in your leather working abilities while enjoying the company of some really nice people, you will want to be at each meeting of the Pitt Pounders in the months to come!

For those of you with internet access, (and the ability to use it!) there are plenty of pictures of the show on our site. www.pittpounders.org The pictures were taken by Gary Draper and put on our site by our web designer, Johanna Schroer. Included are pictures of the pieces entered in the competition. And of the 239 pieces entered this year, there were a number of our members whose good workmanship was recognized with a ribbon. In the Open Division: Kevin Cohn, 3rd place in billfolds or wallets stamped and a 1st in belts stamped. Mary Ann Kunig, 1st place in clutch purses carved and a 3rd in furniture. Ann Short, 1st place in furniture.

In the Advanced Division: Dave Briggs got a 1st in pictures, colored, flat, under 100 square inches and a 2nd in small carrying & sporting cases. Jeff Carnes received a 1st in large carrying & sporting cases as well as the Best Of Category in Category I, cases. In the Masters Division: Greg Prutz received a 2nd in pictures colored, flat, a 2nd in pictures embossed, and a 2nd in molded sculptured items. Bill Brown not only received a 1st for the IILG Special Competition, he also took a 1st in pictures embossed, the Best Of Category in Category Q, pictures as well as the Best Of Show! Way to go Bill, and all of you who put the time and effort into your work!

If you entered an item at the show and you are planning to be at this months meeting, please bring your piece with you. A number of us were so busy that even if we did get a few minutes to check out the competition pieces, it wasn’t enough to look at every item closely. Please give us the opportunity to appreciate your good work.

I did receive one request for some repair work at the show. A gentleman who has his own security business needs the thumb-break snaps repaired on two holsters. If you can do this, please let me know and I will give you his contact information.

Well Folks, we did it. Between the Pitt Pounders & the IILG, with so many people giving of their time and effort, we hosted a fun & successful show. Again, I truly appreciate each of you and the effort you gave this show. And even though it may be awhile before we host

another IFLOG Show, it would be good to learn as much as we can from this show. I’m sure what we learn can even help us to do a better job hosting our next Jamboree. So think about it. What did you like about this show? What didn’t you like? How could we have made things better? Run smoother? Gotten more of the general public involved? Improved the show in any way? We’ll talk about these things at this months meeting, and if you can’t be there, please feel free to send me your thoughts. Your insights can help us to learn, grow and be a better guild.

And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want you to know just how thankful I am to be part of such a great group of fun, talented and hard working folks.  I hope you are looking forward to our monthly get together as much as I am.

                                                                                           Your friend,                                                                                                                               Christopher

November Meeting Project

This month we will be designing and starting a phone case for a cellular phone.  This case can be made from tooling leather or chrome tanned leather.  It goes together with rivets and has a steel belt snap to hold it in place.

This design can be modified to hold many different items.  A couple examples are water bottles or other electronic items.

This meeting you will need to bring several items with you.

Heavy paper, ruler, pencil,

and possibly an eraser to make your pattern.

A piece of leather 6” x 12” or larger.  This should be 4/5 or 5/6 oz weight something comparable if you are using chrome tanned leather.

You should also bring a strip of the leather you will be using that is approximately½” by 12” to make adjustments to the pattern to fit your particular phone.

This strip of leather will save a lot of time in adjusting the pattern to match the weight of leather you are using.  It can be an edge you trimmed off the whole piece of leather to get a straight edge.  It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just the same weight as the leather you will be using.

If you want to cut out your leather case at the meeting, be sure to bring a cutting board, and something to cut with.  If you want to tool the case at the meeting, be sure to bring your tools.

Next month we will assemble the case at the meeting. Then you will have at least one present done for the holidays.

Once you see the case assembled, you will be surprised how quickly you can make these cases.

We will have a limited supply of steel snaps on hand at the meeting for minimal cost.

  See you at the meeting.

                                                            Terry Moore
