SEPT GUILD MEETING;

THE LAST MEETING WAS TERRIFIC. JEFF CARNES TALKED AND DEMONSTRATED HOW TO USE  “THE HEAD KNIFE” . JEFF HAS BEEN USING ONLY THE  HEAD KNIFE  SENSE HE BEGAN DOING LEATHER WORK  EIGHTEEN  YEARS AGO.

HE BEGAN HIS TALK DESCRIBING THE WIDE VARIETY OF KNIVES AND THEIR  USES. AT ONE  POINT, THERE WERE ABOUT TWENTY KNIVES ON THE TABLE, HE DEMONSTRATED HIS  PREFERENCES OF THE MOST COMMON KNIVES.

JEFF THEN CUT OUT PATTERNS HE INTENDED TO USE FOR A GUN HOLSTER. HE POINTED OUT THAT AS HE WORKS,  HE WILL BUFF THE KNIVES OFTEN TO KEEP THEM SHARP.

THE LAST FEW YEARS, WITH ONE EXCEPTION, JEF HAS WON FIRST  PLACE WITH  EVERY   HOLSTER HE HAS ENTERED IN COMPETITION. HE USUALLY MAKES DOUBLE HOLSTERS, AND ALL ARE CARVED  SHERIDAN STYLE” . HE GENERALLY USES NINE STITCHES PER INCH, EXCEPT WITH SMALL ITEMS, HE WILL GO TO  TWELVE STITCHES PER INCH.

JEFF POINTED OUT , THAT WHEN USING A HEAD KNIFE, KEEP IT SHARP. IF YOU CUT ON  WOOD, MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO KNOTS IN IT.

                                                                        AS ALWAYS,  DRAPER

October – November Meetings Christmas Project

At the September meeting, we were talking  and we suggested we do a Christmas type project this year.  It needed to be something quick and relatively inexpensive.  So I came up with  making a door hanger with bells.

A lot of the members at the meeting saw the catalog from Weaver Leather with the different bells and door hangers.

To make the project, you will need to be ready to order the hardware (ring and bells) and pay for it at the October meeting.

You will need the following items to make the project:

1.    3” brass ring to go over the door knob.  Approx. price $3.00.

2.    Brass bells.  You decide how many you want.  Approx price $1.50 to $9.25 each depending on the size and finish.  These are cast brass bells that are very durable and have a nice sound.  I will bring several samples of the bells to the October meeting.

3.    A pin to hold each bell on the leather strap.  Approx cost $0.20 each.

4.    A piece of leather about twice as long as you want your bell strap in 8/9 or heavier leather.  Lighter leather will not hold the weight of the bells properly and the double length will allow you to cover the pins and back of the bell to prevent damage to the door.  These bells are not thin, plated steel. We will have leather if you need a piece.

5.    You will also need a couple rivets, and sewing supplies to assemble the strap.

The October meeting will be the time to design the bell strap.  You should bring pattern paper or poster board to make your pattern and whatever pencils or other equipment you will need to draw your pattern.  You may also want to bring something to cut the pattern so you can see how it will look.

You can take the pattern home and cut the leather and tool whatever design you want on the leather.  You can also dye and finish the leather strap so we can finish the project at the November meeting.

The November meeting will be used to assemble the bell straps and attach the bells.  We should be able to complete the door hangers at this meeting.

See you in October.

“PAINTING COW”

"The newsletter is designed to inform you of new products, special deals, work shops, and tips and corrections on current publications." Besides all of that good stuff, each issue will have a leather working lesson in it. Septembers was  a 7 page tutorial on Leather Carving Essentials.

THE NEWSLETTER IS FREE, THE WEB SITE IS  Painting Cow

So please check this out. The information in this lesson is so good, perhaps we could use it as a guide for an upcoming work session at one of  our meetings. What do you think?
