                               Don’t forget your tools!!

That’s right folks. If you are planning on being at the Harvest Of Leather Show at the Day’s Inn in Butler, PA, October 13-15, you will want to have your swivel knife, mallet, marble, and your favorite bevellers, pear shaders, etc. etc.. Why, you ask? So that you can participate in the Hide Crafter’s Tooling Contest! Here’s the deal. The contest will be Saturday, October 14th, from 5:15PM-6:15PM. George Hurst has already drawn up a brand new pattern for the contest. When the contest begins he will pass out his original pattern along with some of Hide Crafter’s excellent tooling leather. From that point, those who are in the Masters Division will have 30 minutes to complete the pattern. Those in the Advanced Division will have 45 minutes to complete it. And those in Open will have 60 minutes. Besides providing a pattern and the leather to tool it on, George is awarding the winner from each Division with  a $50 gift certificate to Hide Crafters! Could you use an extra $50 worth of leather supplies? Are you ready for a little competition to see if you are good enough to win it? If so, don’t forget your tools!

Those of you who have taken part in this contest know how much fun and how challenging it can be. And that is just one of the exciting and rewarding things you will be able to do at this show! Have you registered for either of the pre-show classes or one of the mini workshops yet? They are the perfect opportunity to learn from some of today’s Masters. Have you finished those projects you wanted to enter in the competition? Can you imagine seeing a competition room with over 200 high quality entries from all around the world? Folks, are you ready to meet some great people, learn a lot and get all the tools & supplies you need??? If you are, the time is now!

Hey, do you want to know a great way to meet new people at the show? How about volunteering to spend some time at the registration table? Or how about the raffle table? Or helping set up the competition room? Or spend Friday evening with three other folks judging? The ways that you can meet new people, have fun AND help out are almost limitless. There will be sign up sheets at the registration table on Friday. Please see where you can help out.

Speaking of helping out at the raffle table, just wait until you see all the great items that have been donated! Everything from sides of leather to a brand new Dell Laptop! Blanche Byrne has done an outstanding job of getting donations. So much so that we had to move the raffle up one hour so that we can fit the over 250 drawings in before we have to be out of the room! So make sure you rob your piggy bank before you get there. You’ll be seeing A LOT of items that you will want to take a chance on.

And don’t forget the two special raffles that will be drawn Saturday afternoon: An autographed copy of Al Stholmans Pictorial Carving Finesse or the Tool Raffle, with a  $1,000 gift certificate to your favorite vendor/supplier as the top prize! The $500 second place or $250 third place winners will be happy people as well. And you could be one of the lucky winners. But like the lottery ad’s say, you have to play to win!

Have you given any thought to what items you are going to bring for our guild display? Remember that this is our opportunity to show the rest of the leather world the quality and diversity of our members work. This is the show to bring out your best work. And knowing that you don’t have to pack it up and mail it somewhere else should make you feel a little better about bringing it to the show. Come on folks, let’s show the leather world what the Pitt Pounders are capable of!

Two Day Pre-Show Classes & Mini Workshops

Haven’t yet decided which class or mini workshop you want to attend? Well don’t wait any longer! Although not all of them have limits on number of students, they are filled on a first register, first serve basis. Now it is too late to send, or resend, your registration to Carol Higgins in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, but she still needs to know. So if you would like to take part in one of these learning experiences, please send Carol an email at: higgins@teknology.net or if you don’t do email, give her a call at 260- 312 - 9968. You’ll be glad you did! And don’t forget that all of the information on each class, what you will learn, what tools & supplies you need to bring/what will be provided, is all available on line at www.pittpounders.org

Just a reminder in case you are new to these shows. After the awards ceremony on Saturday evening there is a Swap Shop followed by the All Night Tooling Session. The Swap Shop is the perfect opportunity to turn those ‘extra’ tools & supplies you have laying around into some extra cash, which you can then go spend on different tools & supplies, or maybe even some more raffle tickets! It’s also the perfect time to pick up some good stuff at very reasonable prices and/or find that one tool or pattern that you have been searching for. Whether you are looking to sell or looking to buy, you’ll want to be there.

And then you can try out those new tools you’ve bought throughout the day at the All Night Tooling Session, the perfect way to end a day. And sometimes it’s even the perfect way to go into the next day!

Lastly, the Day’s Inn has put together some delicious buffets for us at some very affordable prices. Take for example the Friday Lunch Buffet, served 11:00-2:00. The menu includes Baked Crumb Cod, Creamed Chicken over Biscuits, Rice Pilaf, Mixed Vegetables, and Soup & Salad Bar for only $6.25. Or the Saturday Dinner, served 5:00-9:00. It includes Roast Turkey with Stuffing, Roast Beef in Au Jus, Whipped Potatoes, Prince Edward Vegetables, and Soup & Salad Bar for only $8.95. You can find the complete menu in the Show Program, and you can find the Brentwood Cafι’ inside the Day’s Inn. Enjoy!

Let me close by thanking each one of you who has, or will, do what you can to make this show a success. Without your hard work, none of this could have happened. It’s my privilege to get to work along side of you.

                                                                                                Your Friend,

                                                                                                Christopher
